A project born in lockdown...

Moray-based artists, Mary Bourne and Lynne Strachan spent the summer of 2021 developing an arts project in The Cabrach. This remote depopulated area of desolate beauty is situated on the northernmost fringe of the Cairngorms National Park just on the Moray side of the border with Aberdeenshire. Beneath the surface lie the stories of families who lived there, the farms and businesses they ran, the reasons they left and the memories they still hold.

INVERHARROCH STEADING,
LOWER CABRACH

Cast iron portraits of inhabited houses and glass representations of derelict ones. Inhabitants still watch for their neighbours’ lights coming on at dusk.

During the reformation when things got too hot for them, priests from the seminary hidden in the hills at Scalan used to seek refuge at Shenval in The Cabrach, almost certainly bringing their most treasured items with them IN BOXES CALLED RELIQUARIES.

THIS RELIQUARY IS FOR PEOPLE TAKING THEIR MEMORIES WITH THEM WHEN THEY LEAVE THE CABRACH.

Based around the path of the River Deveron as it meanders through the Upper Cabrach, casts from Monopoly pieces in copper and silver represent the derelict and inhabited houses in the area respectively.

As we walked round The Cabrach, we realised the views we saw reflected in the windows of derelict properties represented what would have been seen by the former inhabitants.

Everything in a rural area is dependent on the quality of the soil. In The Cabrach the quality of the water that flowed through the soil influenced the whisky made by early illicit distillers who hid their copper equipment in the folds of the hills. This piece is interactive, Each copper vessel plays a different sound.

A tactile memento of a now-derelict house overlooking the Deveron. The family that grew up here still visits regularly.

When people leave their homes, it is the small precious things that they are able to take with them. Many memories are bound up with these small treasures.

This jewellery has been produced in a small edition and is being sold in aid of the Cabrach Trust to support their work regenerating the area.
